LWES Technology: Digital Story Telling

Teachers are you tired of teaching boring writing lessons that students simply create a story? Spice your lessons with digital storytelling.  In this unit, students will learn the age-old practice of storytelling and use 21st century tools to create their own digital story.


This lesson is based off  ePals  Global Community website on teaching students about digital storytelling. *Prior to the lesson beginning, teachers will need to sign up their students for accounts. They will exchange e-mails with other students who are also participating in this same project. 

Objectives: 
Students will be able to: 
1. Understand that digital storytelling is an effective way to have their voices heard and make a meaningful connection with others. 
2. Identify a topic, brainstorm ideas around that topic and write a personal narrative.
3.Demonstrate an understanding of digital storytelling. 


Students will use technology to: 
1. Develop a topic for their story
2. Write their story, receive and provide feedback
3. Create or find an appropriate image to relate to their story
4. Share and reflect on their story. 

Howard County Objectives (These objectives were taken from the Language Arts Curriculum for grade three). 
Goal A: Composition - The student will compose in a variety of modes employing specific forms:
1. Write to Express Personal Ideas Objectives - The student will be able to compose or written, and visual presentations that express personal ideas by selecting a form (e.g., journal entry, paragraph, narrative, poem, play) and its appropriate elements (e.g., plot, dialogue, rhyme scheme, vivid language), specifically:
a. Compose to express personal ideas to develop fluency using a variety of forms suited to the topic, audience, and purpose. 

Technology objectives from Howard County:  Objective - The student will be able to:
a.     Select and use technology tools to encourage collaboration 

1. Use technology tools to exchange ideas with individuals or groups outside of the school community
Goal 4: Technology for Communication and Expression – The students at grade five will use technology to communicate information and express ideas using various media formats.
  a.     Select and use technology for communication
1.       Use communication tools (such as e-mail, discussion boards, online conferences, Learning Management Systems, portfolios) to gather information, share ideas, and respond to questions.
2.       Present information independently to various audiences
